Youth Sports Thrive in Awesometown

August 25th, 2010 by John | 1 comment

It’s no secret that Awesometown is a wonderful place for kids to grow up — fantastic parks, award-winning schools and friendly neighbors. But you may not know that Valencia is also home to some of the best children’s sports teams around,  proving again and again just how awesome this town is.

Children in Valencia have their choice when it comes to sports. Locally offered athletic programs include soccer, baseball, softball, football, golf, cheerleading, tennis, volleyball and much more, with several champion teams hailing from Awesometown.

Perhaps the most distinguished team, Hart Baseball, has established Valencia as both the place to be and the place to beat. Hart Baseball recently made headlines when their Hart Mustang Red team was crowned first in the Pony Mustang World Series, a second win since 2007 for the hardworking team.

Adding to the excitement, several other teams are representing the Santa Clarita Valley in style and with a passion for excellence. Canyon County Little League scored big with their second consecutive win at this year’s District 40 Championship. Not to be outdone, the Canyon Country Athletic Association senior cheer team took home the title at Sharps National Cheer Championship this year.

And we cannot forget the Canyon’s Aquatics Club who recently sent 5 of its members to the USA Swimming National Championships to compete against the top swimmers in the U.S.

The Community Hiking Club is another great way to get outdoors and get active. The group has regular hikes of all levels, so anyone can participate and enjoy the great outdoors around Valencia.

Why Awesometown?

August 16th, 2010 by John | 0 comments

Some people wondered why we started calling Valencia “Awesometown.” While the word may conjure up images of skateboarding robots hanging out in the town center or dogs dancing to ’80s music along the Paseos (both of which would be supremely awesome), it really captures the spirit of Valencia. This is a town where people look out for each other, where neighbors are neighborly and where, even in a time when technology seems to take over our lives, there still exists an active sense of community.

In the process of brainstorming our new campaign, we asked local residents for their thoughts about life in Valencia. People raved about Valencia’s unique lifestyle, great schools, incredible friendliness and convenient shopping and dining. Many folks even described Valencia as awesome. It seemed unusual at first that people would use such a term to describe a town, but the more we thought about it, the more it made sense.

The word awesome refers to something “remarkable or outstanding.” What better way to describe a place with acres of parks, over 30 miles of trails, over 60,000 jobs, one of the nation’s top art colleges, a state-of-the-art hospital and some of the highest ranking schools in the state.

So why did we start calling Valencia Awesometown? Turns out it was Awesome all along.

Disney Brings Its Magic To The Santa Clarita Valley

August 11th, 2010 by John | 1 comment

Late last year, the Walt Disney Company filed plans to build a large soundstage and production complex on the northwest corner of its Golden Oak Ranch in the Santa Clarita Valley. The proposed studio, named Disney | ABC Studios at The Ranch, will span 56 acres of Golden Oaks Ranch. Making movies in the Santa Clarita Valley is nothing new for Disney; the company has used the Golden Oaks Ranch as a filming location for many films over the past 50 years, including Big Top Pee-Wee, Back to the Future, Pete’s Dragon, The Parent Trap (1961), The Shaggy Dog, Old Yeller and more.

While not right in the midst of Valencia, Disney | ABC Studios at the Ranch is directly adjacent and will add even more to the unique live/work environment Valencia residents have come to love. The studios will also create many new opportunities for area residents and businesses. According to Disney, the new studio will bring in over 3,000 jobs during construction and will provide nearly as many full- and part-time jobs once completed. Full details of the project, including frequently asked questions, economic projections, renderings, interactive tours and more, can be found on the studio’s website at http://www.studiosattheranch.com/. If you would like to stay up to date on the project (as well as receive notification when they begin hiring), sign up for their newsletter, at http://www.studiosattheranch.com/support.

Be Safe and Have Fun in the Sun with Your Canines!

August 2nd, 2010 by John | 0 comments

This past Saturday we had coffee brewing and tails wagging as visitors and their pets joined forces for Awesometown’s anticipated Canines and Coffee event. The family-friendly event brought neighbors together, showcased spectacular Frisbee-catching dog athletes and even gave some lucky canines a chance at that new home they’ve been looking for. Guests and their pets mingled while being treated to free coffee from Newhall Coffee Roasting Company and the local favorite, donuts from S&S, but what really made the event special was the addition of New Leash on Life—their pet adoptions united rescued dogs with pet-seeking visitors, leaving both canines and guests elated. It was great to have them there.

All this talk about fun and pets got us thinking. It can be difficult to fit pet playtime in during the summer heat, but luckily for you, we’ve assembled a list of summer pet safety tips to help you enjoy time in the sun with your furry friends.

1. Never Leave Your Pet in the Car

It’s summer—the time to get out and drive, and this often means bringing your pets in on the fun. But during the heat, your car can easily heat up to temperatures higher than 120° F in only a few minutes, so always make sure to leave your pet in a cool, shaded area—not the car.

2. Always Provide Water

Unlike humans, dogs cannot perspire to reduce body temperature, so it is essential that they have an ample supply of water to drink and to wet themselves with. If your pet’s overheated, try splashing some water on him; this will cool him down quickly and keep him safe from heat stroke.

3. Always Provide Shelter and Shade

Everyone likes to be outside during the summer, but too much time in the sun can be dangerous, especially for a dog. They have thick fur coats that absorb heat, so it is very important that they have shaded areas or shelter where they can find protection from the sun.

4. Beware of Fertilizers, Insecticides and Deadly Plants

With the sun out, it’s the season to garden, which means there are extra fertilizers and insecticides lying around. In addition, there are several hundreds of poisonous plants that thrive in the summer. Be careful to make sure that your canine doesn’t ingest any of these toxic substances.

5. Limit Exercise to Early Mornings and Evenings

Even during hot summer days, pets still need to get their daily play and exercise.  To avoid the intense heat of summer afternoons, try to limit play hours to early mornings and evenings. This way, both you and your pet can avoid the intensity of the sun and enjoy some quality time together.

For more information regarding summer pet safety tips, please visit the Humane Society at their website.

July 27th, 2010 by John | 4 comments

We’ve received lots of requests for more information about the Canines and Coffee event coming up this Saturday, July 31, so here are all the details you’ll need to know.

The event will begin at 9:30 am next to the New Home Showplace located in West Creek, adjacent to Terry Miller Park [directions] and will be open to both dogs and their owners. If you don’t have a dog of your own, don’t worry, there will still be plenty of fun to be had, or you can adopt your new best friend at the event. Visitors will be treated to free coffee from Newhall Coffee Roasting Company while local favorite S&S will provide guests with free donuts throughout the event. Meanwhile, dog lovers will get a chance to meet and mingle with each other on what is expected to be a beautiful Saturday morning.

At 10 am, and then again at 11 am, we will be hosting dog agility shows featuring amazing Frisbee-catching dogs! These professional dog athletes promise to put on a great performance for the whole family! The agility shows will be followed by “Pat and Chat” time where you can meet the star canines up close!

Need a new Pooch? Don’t miss the pet adoptions going on until 2 pm, presented by New Leash on Life Animal Rescue. New Leash on Life is a local animal rescue center responsible for spaying and neutering thousands of pets as well as rescuing over 3,000 dogs. The center also provides free educational seminars at local shelters and makes it a priority for shelters to find homes for hard-to-place animals requiring medical or special care.
