What Will I Do This Weekend?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

One of the awesome things about Valencia and the Santa Clarita Valley is there’s always something going on.  From soccer matches to baseball games to charity 5K walks or golf tournaments, outside daytime activities abound.  But if you looking for an evening event – and a way to be philanthropic – you don’t have to look any further than the Community Calendar located on Santa-Clarita.com (or postings on our blog!).

Coming up February 27, the Senior Center presents its Celebrity Waiter fundraiser at Hyatt Regency Valencia, with a theme of “High School Prom.”  Time to dig out the pale blue tuxedos and poufy dresses and support our seniors while dining and dancing. What a blast it will be!

March 6 brings the Silver Spur Award dinner for College of the Canyons Foundation – with a dressy western theme and the Gene Autry Museum as a backdrop. March 7 is the Santa Clarita Master Chorale’s Midwinter Madrigal Feast at the Hyatt Regency Valencia.  The Master Chorale is a treat to listen to – and the theme is very well implemented.  I went last year and had a great experience.

The end of March brings the Sweet Charity Cake Auction for The SCV Youth Project where local companies, charities and schools design fabulous specialty cakes for display and auction.  It’s at the TPC Valencia Golf Course Clubhouse so you also get a great view of the valley with the price of admission.

Check out the community calendar or all the blogs in Valencia to find out more about our local charitable scene.  There is no excuse to sit home if you’d rather be having fun while supporting our community.

Cutting-Edge Performing Arts Pavilion at CalArts Arrives

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Want to catch the latest modern and cutting-edge performing arts? Now you can, right here in Valencia! California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), just completed The Wild Beast–a shape-shifting, multi-use music pavilion on the CalArts’ campus. It was designed by the Los Angeles-based architectural firm Hodgetts+Fung.  A rolling wall allows the 3,200 square-foot structure to transform from an acoustically refined recital hall accommodating 140 to an outdoor performance space for audiences of up to 1,000.

So if you’ve enjoyed performances at CalArt’s REDCAT downtown at Disney Concert Hall, you are sure to enjoy The Wild Beast now in Valencia!

The building takes its name from a quote from an essay by contemporary composer Morton Feldman: “I am interested in how the wild beast lives in the jungle, not in the zoo,” his metaphor for the nature of creative energy.

The Wild Beast will host its first public performance on Saturday, May 8 at 8 pm.  This will be the last evening of CalArts annual World Music Festival.

Landscape architect and CalArts alumnus Allen Compton is planning a vibrant garden setting for the surrounding courtyard–conceiving the amphitheater and lawn as a space for both public performances and informal campus gatherings.  In recognition of the generous gift from the S. Mark Taper Foundation, CalArts has named the courtyard the S. Mark Taper Foundation Courtyard. The Courtyard is slated for completion in winter 2010.

A New Address for Newhall Land

Friday, February 12th, 2010

So, for all the Newhall Land junkies out there, you may know that we have spent most of our formative years in a two-story building on Valencia Boulevard, next to the Sheriff’s Station and Library.

We were pioneers then – long before City Hall, the Bank of America building, the Auto Club and, of course, the mall (I mean Valencia Town Center!).  Our chain ensconced building (the chains are actually cleverly disguised rain gutters) was an early landmark in Valencia.  And it was a great building – for 33 years.

Today, its 1970’s design wasn’t as efficient or conducive to collaboration as our business demands  and, as we were smaller in numbers from our old homebuilding days, we rattled around in it.

Find us now in a cool building off of Tourney Road – 25124 Springfield Court – in Valencia Corporate Center.  We have the whole 3rd floor in a very interactive state-of-the-art environment. Oh, and did I mention the views?!  We are still right off of Valencia Boulevard, but we are inching closer to the next phase of our Valencia story – Newhall Ranch.

Visit us at www.valencia.com, or 25124 Springfield Court or catch us around the community.  Newhall Land is in a new location for the new decade and still very much a part of the Santa Clarita Valley!

Even More Shopping, Dining and People Watching

Friday, February 12th, 2010

The Patios have opened! Those of us who have lived in Valencia awhile have trouble imagining life without the Valencia Town Center and Town Center Drive. We have been eagerly awaiting the new expansion called The Patios. And even with a tough economy, The Patios is delivering!  Two new restaurants – Lazy Dog Café and Dink’s Deli – with more to come – help enhance our culinary experiences and several retail stores – including BCBG Max Azaria, Brighton Collectibles, Yankee Candle, En Ciel Jewelry and Parc 81 add to the great mix of tenants in the Town Center. And don’t forget Menchies Yogurt!

The Patios has added great open air spaces with lush landscaping, community fire pits, fun water features and comfortable seating.  Grab lunch, do some shopping and then sit and people watch for a while.  Valencia Town Center is growing better and better every day.

West Creek Community Park Dedicated

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Newhall Land and the LA County Department of Parks and Recreation recently dedicated the new West Creek Community Park in Valencia.

Newhall Land completed the 17-acre park at a cost of $4.5 million and features a basketball court, 2 children’s’ playgrounds, an intimate amphitheatre seating area and two group picnic shelters with tables and bbq grills. West Creek Park is connected to over 30 miles of Valencia’s renowned paseo system and river trail, allowing local residents to enjoy the park and easily connect with nature, schools and neighborhood shopping.

The new park is located at 24247 Village Circle in Valencia, nestled between Rio Norte Junior High School and San Francisquito Creek. West Creek Community Park becomes the latest dedication by Newhall Land to the nearly 300 acres of park and dedicated natural open space in Valencia.

Valencia Vikings Advance to CIF Semifinal
JANUARY 30, 2010
The first half Thursday’s playoff game at Valencia
High was exactly what Buena wanted. They got a
yeoman’s effort from the defense and a big play
turned into a 14-7 lead. However, in the second
half those insurmountable odds caught up to the
team as the Vikings got hot and scored on their
first four offensive possessions on the way to a
41-14 victory.
“This is the playoffs,” said Vikings coach Larry
Muir. “I told the team anything could happen.”
The team obviously believed because “anything”
almost did happen.
The #2 overall seed in the bracket came out sluggish and was surprised by Valencia’s
defensive speed and tenacity. Buena converted an early turnover into seven points, but the
Vikings answered with one of the best drives of the season.
